The Top 10 Things That Ruin Careers

It’s really easy to think of catastrophic blunders that bring an immediate end to a job.  I imagine punching a boss or embezzling money or drug use at work.

That’s not what this top-10 list covers.  In this video we review those subtle things we do, mostly without even realizing it, that constantly undermine our career.  These are not dismissible offenses either. They are things that get us pigeon-holed when it’s time for promotion.  Because they exist, career aspirations cease to exist.  We become, instead, the paid undead…walking zombies who earn a living but never make a difference.

FORMAT:

  • 15-20 minute overview of the topic
  • 40 minutes of Q&A with a consultative focus
  • Closing prayer at top of the hour
  • Additional 60 minutes of group executive coaching for whomever stayed on the call

Length: 1:53:34

Wow… this was surely an eye-opening session on so many levels. I can unfortunately identify several of those “paid undead” qualities in myself… It seems like a mountain of things to overcome. How do I start?

Thanks for the comment and for the kind words. I’m glad it helps bring clarity. And yes, you ask a great question for all of us to consider: “Why do I start?”

Let me begin my answer by giving a brief definition of overwhelm. Overwhelm is when we believe all actions hold the same importance.

When we tell ourselves, “I have to fix everything,” or “I have to respond to everyone,” or “I have to attend right now to each action item,” our brains inject stress hormones into our bloodstream to get the job done. One of those stress hormones is adrenaline, also known as epinephrine. This gets our heartrate going so we can respond to the demands we put on ourself to get everything done.

I’m sure you can see the downside to this, yes? We can’t get everything done at the same time. That means everything can’t hold the same importance. Each of those 10 Career Limiting Moves can not all be equally relevant right now.

So, the best place to start (i.e. what works best for me in these situations) is choosing which one has the most immediate relevance to you right now. Read through the list and choose that one, first “thing” from the “Top 10 Things” and pursue change there first. Here is how I recommend pursuing change:
      1. Ask God for deeper wisdom and understanding about this thing (James 1:5)
      2. Get out a journal and start writing about what you want to change, each day, keeping it brief and limited to what you feel like writing
      3. Do a search on Google for “How do I change ___thing___?”
      4. Read many articles or books or opinions and watch videos about it
      5. In your journal takes notes on what resonates most with you about what you are reading
      6. Identify one or two techniques you learn from the reading/watching efforts
      7. Map out a Specific, Measureable, Achieveable, Relevant and Timebound plan on how you will start turning around
      8. Enjoy the ride, thanking God for every up and down along the way

Once you have a good handle on this first “thing”, then get the list of “Top 10 Things” and choose the second one to pursue…thanking God all along the way.

      I hope this helps, Simone.
      Thanks again for asking.

      In Him,
      Shawn
