The Dark Side of Earning to Give

Nearly every Christian I’ve met deeply desires to help the poor, needy, sick or impoverished. Many have come to realize they can use future career earnings to make a bigger impact, in some cases up to 100x what they contribute today. This truly is noble.

Most don’t realize, however, there is a dark side of the earning-to-give movement. The pursuit of higher income sometimes hurts more than it heals. Known as “effective altruism,” this philosophy of giving back has even become, for some, a way to hide devious behavior.

There are those who pledge millions, never to make good on their promise. Others donate to the very interest groups they secretly abuse. And still others outright lie about their giving just to enhance their image.

Would Christians fall prey to the same temptations? Doesn’t our Jesus-focus prevent us from wading in the murky deception of generous wealth? Watch this video to learn about toxic philanthropy and what we can do to prevent it.
